Physical Education

INTENT STATEMENT
Our ambition is for all children to enjoy P.E, to encourage each other and fulfil their potential. As P.E. is an essential part of a child's development, our intent is to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required to make a positive impact to their own physical health, fitness and well-being, while also increasing confidence and competence in a range of physical activities. We aim to ensure that the children’s experience of physical education is positive and motivating, so they will enjoy participating in a variety of physical activities, and have fun with their peers. P.E. will not only develop physical literacy and physical skills, but along with PSHE and science, it will also allow pupils to learn about good nutrition, and the long-term importance of keeping a healthy, active lifestyle.
We aim to:
- Develop confidence, skills and knowledge
- Be proud of our achievements
- Promote fair play and respect
- Educate children to improve health and well being
- Enjoy physical activity
- Provide quality opportunities for children to participate in competitive sport with other schools
- Provide interschool tournaments in a variety of sports
Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities will be offered to all children, in order to build character and explore key conventions of fair play, honest competition and good sporting behaviour as individual participants, team members and spectators. Thus, embedding life-long values such as co-operation, collaboration and equity of play. Through the development of physical confidence and problem solving, we endeavour to teach children to cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual and team based physical activities.
We provide a safe and supportive environment for children to flourish in a range of different physical activities, which is essential in supporting their physical, emotional, spiritual, social and moral development. A high-quality P.E. curriculum will motivate all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport, and other physically demanding activities. We aim to develop a dynamic, varied and stimulating program of activities, to ensure that all children progress physically through a fully inclusive P.E. curriculum.
Pupils will also be offered the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular activities throughout the year, including a broad range of sports, as well as Bikeability and in-house festivals. In addition to this, sessions will be offered by Erewash School Sports Partnership in activities such as gymnastics, football, racket sports, fencing, alternative sports and ‘This Girl Can’ festivals. A residential course at Walesby is offered to pupils in Year 5 and 6, giving them the opportunity to experience outdoor recreational activities that are not usually available in the normal school timetable, such as abseiling, rock climbing, orienteering and water sports.
Children are motivated to participate in a variety of sports and activities, including swimming in Year 4. Pupils speak positively about P.E. and engage well in lessons. All children develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports, and are able to evaluate and recognise their own successes. All learning builds towards clearly defined end of Key Stage objectives that meet the requirements of the National Curriculum.
We share sporting achievements (both in and out of school) in ‘Special Mentions’ assemblies, so that we are promoting sports and activities, as well as celebrating all levels of success. By the end of year 6, pupils understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle, and understand the importance of regular exercise. Pupils leave our school in an excellent position to independently make good choices regarding health and fitness.
IMPLEMENTATION
At Cotmanhay Junior School, we follow the 'PE Planning' scheme of work. Click on the following links for details of the learning covered in each year group.
IMPACT STATEMENT
At Cotmanhay Junior School, we help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports and activities through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. By following the PE Planning scheme of work, we ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills. All children are provided with the necessary skills and opportunities to demonstrate improvement and achieve their personal best.
Subject monitoring indicates high expectations, and reflects what pupils have learned to the expected standard. We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- Images and videos of the children’s practical learning
- Asking the pupils about their learning (pupil voice)
- Lesson observations where there is the opportunity for a dialogue between teachers
- Verbal feedback of work during lessons
- Completion and analysis of half-termly assessment grids to inform planning of future lessons
- Analysing the proportion of pupils who access an after school sporting club
Our pupils are encouraged to be physically active, and this has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of regular exercise. We aspire for children to enjoy PE and develop a love of sport and physical activity which becomes part of their future life outside of primary school. All children are given the opportunity to join in with clubs and extra-curricular PE activities throughout the year – both at lunch times and after school – and can also represent the school at a range of local sporting competitions and festivals.
We aim for all Year 6 pupils to leave school with the skills to competently swim at least 25m and have the skills to self-rescue in the water, which are key life skills. From the assessment of all of these key areas, we are then able to prioritise funding and future input for groups of children in a focused way.
